If you have ordered a flood barrier for a wide opening, whether that is a driveway, a loading bay, a courtyard gateway or a set of patio doors, you may have seen the term “ground insert” on your drawings or quotation and wondered what it actually refers to.

This guide explains what ground inserts are, why they are needed, how they are positioned and installed, and what you should reasonably expect from the process.

What Are Flood Barrier Ground Inserts?

A demountable flood barrier is made up of aluminium panels that slide into vertical wall rails fixed either side of an opening. For narrower openings, two wall rails are all that is required. The panels span the gap and the barrier is self supporting.

Once an opening gets wider, usually beyond around a metre and a half, a single unsupported span is no longer strong enough to resist the load that standing floodwater places on it. Water is heavy, and the pressure builds quickly with depth. The solution is to divide the opening into shorter bays using one or more intermediate posts.

Those posts are described as demountable because they are only in place when you need them. In normal weather they are stored away and the opening is completely clear, with no trip hazard. When flooding is forecast, each post is dropped into a socket set permanently into the ground and secured. The panels then slide into the posts in the same way that they slide into the wall rails.

That permanent socket in the ground is the ground insert. It is concreted into the ground surface, with a threaded fixing and a removable cap that sits flush when the barrier is not deployed.

Alongside the inserts, most installations also use an aluminium ground strip, which is a flat metal threshold set into the same trench to give the panels a smooth, non porous surface to seal against. Ground inserts are the anchor points and the ground strip is the sealing surface. Together they form what is often called the barrier deployment line.

Why Ground Insert Positioning Matters So Much

This is the point that generates most of the questions we receive. Your flood panels are manufactured to a fixed length, cut to suit the structural opening dimensions supplied at the point of order. That means the distance between each ground insert has to match the panel length almost exactly, allowing for the width of the post itself and a small tolerance for sliding the panels in and out.

If an insert is set even slightly out of position, the consequences are not subtle:
• Panels that are too tight will not drop into the posts at all
• Panels that are too loose will leave a gap that the seals cannot bridge
• An insert set out of alignment will twist the post, so the panel channels no longer line up vertically
• An insert set too high or too low will break the seal along the ground strip

Because the inserts are set in concrete, correcting a mistake means breaking out and starting again. This is why we describe the insert stage as the single most critical element of any installation involving demountable posts, and why it should never be rushed.

How Ground Insert Positions Are Calculated

The calculation itself is straightforward, but it depends on two things being established first. The fixing arrangement. Barriers are either reveal fixed, where the wall rails sit inside the opening against the reveal faces, or face fixed, where the rails are mounted on the face of the wall on the flood side. The two arrangements produce different measurements, because a face fixed rail projects outward and adds to the overall span, while a reveal fixed rail sits within it. Your estimate quote will state which arrangement applies.

The panel length. This is worked out from your structural opening size and the number of bays required. From there, the method follows a consistent logic:
1. Work from one end of the opening and establish the centre point of the first insert, using the panel length adjusted by a fixed allowance that accounts for half the width of the post and the seal clearance
2. For every insert after the first, add the panel length plus the full post allowance to find the next centre point
3. Check that the distance from the final insert back to the wall rail at the opposite end matches the first measurement

That final check is the one that catches errors. If both end bays measure the same and the intermediate bays are consistent, the setting out is correct. If they do not match, something has gone wrong earlier in the sequence and it needs resolving before any concrete is mixed.

The exact allowance figures are specific to each manufacturer’s post section and seal design, so they should always be taken from the installation guide supplied with your barrier rather than assumed from another product.

The Installation Process, Step by Step

Once the positions are agreed, the physical work follows a clear sequence.

1. Survey and preparation

The ground surface needs to be level, sound and non porous along the full deployment line, and the wall faces either side need to be plumb and square. Any remedial work has to be completed first.

We would also always recommend a flood risk assessment by a suitably qualified person before installation, so that every water entry route into the property has been identified. A perfectly installed barrier across one opening achieves little if water is arriving through an airbrick or a service duct nearby.

2. Setting out and marking

The trench line is marked out, along with the centre line of the barrier and the outer edges of the excavation. Each insert centre is then marked with a line that extends clearly beyond the trench on both sides, so that the reference point survives the excavation itself. This small detail saves a great deal of trouble later.

3. Excavation

The trench is cut along the marked lines with an angle grinder or concrete saw, then broken out to the required depth. At each insert position, a deeper pocket is excavated to accommodate the housing. Depths vary with ground conditions, and softer or made up ground may require a deeper foundation.

4. Setting the inserts

Each insert is lowered into its pocket and checked against three things at once: the centre point, the alignment of its shaped sides parallel to the deployment line, and its level. Most inserts are also marked to show which face should point towards the flood side, and getting this the wrong way round will prevent the post seals from working as intended.
Rapid setting concrete is then packed evenly around the insert, and the internal void is filled as well, leaving the threaded fixing clear and protected. Levels and measurements are re checked continuously as the concrete goes off, because there is only a short window in which adjustment is possible.

5. Curing

The concrete around every insert must be fully cured before any further work begins. No ground strip, no wall rails, no test deployment. This is not a stage that can be rushed.

6. Ground strip and wall rails

With the inserts set, the remainder of the trench is filled and the aluminium ground strips are bedded into the wet mix so that their upper surface finishes flush and level with the surrounding floor. Where a ground strip meets an insert it should sit on the lip of the housing with no gap. The strips are commonly supplied cut to length, which makes them a useful template for confirming that the insert spacing is correct.

Once that concrete has set, the joint between insert and strip is sealed, and the wall rails are fixed and sealed. The installation finishes with a test deployment, which is the only real proof that everything lines up.

Common Mistakes We See

• Measuring from the wrong reference. Reveal fixed and face fixed barriers are set out differently. Using the wrong basis puts every insert out.
• Losing the centre marks during excavation. Marks made only inside the trench line disappear with the first pass of the breaker.
• Fitting the insert the wrong way round. The flood side is marked for a reason.
• Working too quickly through curing. Loading a partially cured insert can move it fractionally, which is enough to matter.
• Assuming the panels will adjust. They will not. The ground work has to suit the panels, not the other way round.
• Skipping the test deployment. Discovering a problem during a flood warning is the worst possible outcome.

Can You Install Ground Inserts Yourself?

Many clients fit the barriers themsleves. A competent person with the right equipment can carry out this work. It requires a concrete breaker, a cutting saw, spirit levels, a tape measure and the confidence to work accurately to millimetre tolerances in wet concrete.

For most systems, well under ten minutes per barrier. Individual components are generally light enough for one person to handle without lifting assistance. Speed of deployment is the whole point of a demountable system, and it depends entirely on the ground work having been done accurately.

Can ground inserts be installed into anything other than concrete?

They need a solid concrete foundation. If the existing surface is block paving, gravel, tarmac or otherwise unsuitable, a trench is excavated and a new concrete foundation formed to carry both the inserts and the ground strip.

What maintenance do ground inserts need?

Very little, but they should not be ignored. Keep the caps in place, clear the sockets of grit and debris before deploying, check the seals on the posts and panels periodically, and carry out a test deployment at least once a year, ideally before the autumn.
