Flood barriers protect homes and businesses by sealing doorways, driveways and other entry points before water can get in. A barrier only works if it is fitted correctly, which usually means installing a fixed threshold or groundstrip for the barrier to seal against.
That groundstrip is where most installs are won or lost. Done carelessly, it can leave a strip of unsightly concrete, lifted tiles or a patched-up driveway. Done well, it protects the property and looks like it was always part of the design.
This matters to homeowners, property developers and commercial businesses alike. You are investing in protection, but you also want your entrance to look right afterwards. Below we explain what good installation looks like, why it matters, and we share three real examples of the care our installers put into the finish.
What does a flood barrier installation involve?
A flood barrier is a removable or demountable panel that fits across an opening, such as a door, driveway or patio threshold. To create a watertight seal, the barrier needs a fixed surface to press against.
In most cases this means installing a groundstrip. It is fixed into the floor or ground across the opening, and the barrier seals against it when fitted.
Installing the groundstrip is the part of the job that disturbs the existing surface. The surface might be a tiled floor, a quarry tiled step, a block paved driveway or poured concrete. How the installer handles that surface is what separates a basic fit from a quality one.
Why installation quality matters
Two things are at stake during a flood barrier install: how well it protects, and how it looks afterwards.
On protection, the seal is only as good as the surface it meets. A poorly bedded groundstrip, gaps or an uneven finish can let water track underneath. Property flood resilience products in the UK are tested to BS 851188, and the standard expects them to be installed correctly by a competent person, in line with recognised guidance such as the CIRIA Code of Practice for property flood resilience.
On finish, this is the part many people do not think about until the work is done. With flood risk rising, more properties are fitting these systems. The Environment Agency now estimates around 6.3 million properties in England are in areas at risk of flooding from rivers, the sea or surface water, up from 5.5 million in 2018. As more entrances are adapted, the quality of the finish becomes a real differentiator.
Three examples of care on site
1. Matching bricks on a block paved driveway
On a recent driveway install, fitting the groundstrip would have left a strip of bare concrete running across an otherwise neat block paved driveway.
Rather than leave it, our installer Anton sourced bricks that matched the rest of the driveway and used them to edge the groundstrip. The result reads as part of the original paving design rather than an obvious repair.
2. Cutting and relaying patterned tiles in a conservatory
A second install fitted a barrier to an internal sliding door in a conservatory. The floor was laid with large patterned tiles, and the groundstrip meant some of those tiles had to be moved.
Anton carefully removed the affected tiles, cut them down to fit around the groundstrip, and relaid them. The pattern lines up and the finished threshold keeps the look of the original floor.
3. Replacing weathered quarry tiles at a front door
The third example was a front door fitted with traditional quarry tiles. The existing tiles were already weathered and damaged, so simply relaying them would have looked tired.
Anton sourced new tiles in a similar style and relaid them around the groundstrip, giving the entrance a clean, stylish finish while keeping its character.

A flood barrier should do two jobs at once: protect your property and respect the entrance it is fitted to. The groundstrip is the detail that decides both, because it affects the quality of the seal and the look of the finished threshold.
