The Environment Agency have found the Water-Gate extremely useful for desilting projects to minimise silt being carried and deposited downstream.
Gravel deposits had built up at Chester Burn, upstream of the log catcher. This was preventing the river level monitoring equipment from working correctly and impeding the water flow. To address this the Environment Agency excavated a trench lengthways through the gravel adjacent to the low sheet piled wall to allow water to flow and the river level to gauge to function. The Water-Gate was used to prevent silt being carried and deposited downstream whilst this took place. Saving time and manpower resulted in efficiency savings for the Agency.
Andrew Foster said ‘I thought the Water-Gate was excellent! I was very impressed with how easy the Water-Gate was to deploy which resulted in our desilting project being carried out swiftly. The WaterGate has many benefits that Agency staff can benefit from’.
Tanya Wainwright, Project Manager on behalf of Flood Protection Solutions said that ‘It’s great to see the Environment Agency utilising the Water-Gate and protecting the public purse by looking at whole life cycle cost benefits as the Water-Gate is re-usable and recyclable”.
